DOMAINE JEAN LOUIS BACHELET

Heretofore
the B. Bachelet brothers worked together cultivating the 100 acre domaine.
As it is so often in families, when the children become of age,
Francois Bachelet left the
family domaine taking 33 acres of vines with him
(see Bachelet-Monnot). Now Vincent
and Jean Francois are sole owners
of Domaine Bachelet. These brothers are traditionalists;
they do most
of the vineyard work themselves. Minimal amounts of pesticides and only
organic fertilizers are employed. Many clusters of grapes are eliminated
to reduce quantity.
The harvest is done manually which prevents the unripe
berries or split grapes which
may ferment prematurely in the vat and cause
oxidation.
The domaine originated with only 8 acres. The father Bernard took over
in 1947.
During the 1950’s he accumulated more vines. In
1980 he turned over the vines,
which then totaled 43 acres. The boys
enlarged the domaine to 100 acres now
reduced to 67 acres.
Including the appellations listed below, they also have a strong position in
a relatively
new appellation accorded premier cru status by the French authorities. It
is Maranges
1er Cru La Fussieres. At $25.00 per bottle retail, it is
a worthwhile purchase. The wine
exhibits a true Pinot Noir character
with its deep attractive color. The bouquet a mixture
of fruits such
as black currants, raspberries and blackberries is most attractive.
Other appellations produced are:
Bourgogne Blanc Bourgogne
Rouge
Meursault Vireuils Cote
de Beaune Villages
Meursault Narvaux Maranges
ler Cru "La Fussieres"
Meursault Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet
